Choose your workflow

Chat, Work or Code: choose by the job.

Understand when to use a conversation, a delegated work task or a coding agent in ChatGPT and Claude, with examples for each workflow.

Start with the result you need

These are workflow distinctions rather than intelligence rankings. Chat helps you work something out. A work task produces a deliverable using sources and tools. A coding agent works inside a software project. Overlap exists, so choose the environment that has the material and actions the task needs.

WorkflowA useful starting taskWhat to put in the prompt
ChatExplore why a campaign is not convertingContext, question, assumptions and desired depth
Work / delegated taskProduce a campaign review from reports and assetsInputs, deliverable, constraints, checks and handoff
Code / coding agentFix a campaign landing-page formRepository, failing behaviour, expected behaviour and verification

The product names differ

In OpenAI's products, ChatGPT Work handles larger deliverables and Codex handles software work. In Claude, chat and Cowork are moving into one experience while the Code entry remains. Available tools and the interface depend on plan, settings and rollout.

A conversation can still analyse an attached report. Move toward a work task when you need several sources reconciled, a finished file or actions across tools. Use a coding environment when the output is a verified change to an existing codebase.

Try this prompt

I need [result]. These are the sources: [sources]. Tell me whether this is best handled as a short conversation, a delegated deliverable or a code change in my current environment. Explain which missing tool or input would block the work.

Write a different brief for each

For chat, ask one question and refine the answer. For work, specify what ‘done’ means. For code, provide a reproducible problem and observable expected behaviour. Avoid asking for a large implementation when you still need to decide the product behaviour.

  • Chat: ‘Help me identify the unanswered questions in this product idea.’
  • Work: ‘Turn this approved idea into a launch brief and draft assets using the attached files.’
  • Code: ‘Implement the approved signup behaviour in this repository and verify the error states.’

Common questions

Does Work always give a better answer than chat?

No. Its value is completing a larger task with the relevant tools and sources. A simple question may be faster and easier to refine in chat.

Is a coding model enough to build a reliable app?

No. The agent also needs the codebase, requirements, environment and meaningful verification. Model capability does not replace those inputs.
