Questions: find your answer

How do I get a useful answer instead of a generic one?

Name the job and the details that change the result. ‘Plan dinner’ leaves almost everything open. ‘Plan three dinners for two adults and a six-year-old, with no nuts, one hob and 25 minutes each evening’ gives you something to judge. Ask for the result you need, not an impressive-sounding expert persona.

If essential information is missing, ask for a few questions before the plan. You do not need a long prompt for a simple request.

Try this prompt

Help me plan three weekday dinners for [people and ages]. Diets/allergies: [details]. Budget: [amount]. Equipment and time: [details]. Ask up to three essential questions, then give a menu and one combined shopping list. Flag assumptions; do not guarantee allergen safety.

What should I tell ChatGPT before it makes a plan?

Give it the starting point, deadline, resources and non-negotiable limits. For a revision timetable, supply the actual exam dates, topics, available evenings and subjects you find difficult. Ask for breaks and catch-up time rather than filling every spare minute.

Check the plan against your calendar. A neatly formatted schedule can still put two tasks in the same slot or assume time you do not have.

How do I make ChatGPT analyse my PDF without guessing?

Provide the readable file in an environment that supports files, then say why the report matters and which decision you need to make. Request page or section references for important findings and a separate list of missing information. Uploading a report is not the same as verifying every passage.

Check a few cited passages yourself, especially tables, scans and consequential numbers. If the file cannot be read, use a clear extract rather than letting the answer imply access.

Use this supplied report to help me decide [decision] as [role]. Answer [three questions]. For each finding give the page or section, supporting evidence and practical consequence. Separate the report's statements from your inference. Say ‘not found’ where evidence is missing. Identify unreadable tables or pages; do not invent their contents.

How do I check whether ChatGPT used current information?

For changing facts, request web research if it is available, dated sources and the date to which the answer applies. Then open the sources: a current-looking answer or a real link does not prove that a price, opening time or policy is correct.

For a restaurant, check its own booking page and opening hours before travelling. If search is unavailable, supply current sources yourself or treat the answer as general background.

Which model or tool should I use for my task?

Start with what the job requires. A draft from your notes needs writing ability; a current comparison needs evidence; a poster needs image generation or editing; a repository change needs a coding environment and tests. A different model name does not automatically provide those tools.

Check the options actually available to your account. Try a small representative task before upgrading or entrusting a whole project. There is no single best model for every need.

Can I change one part of an answer without starting again?

Yes: point to the part, explain the problem and name what must stay fixed. If Tuesday's dinner needs too much oven time, ask for a replacement and an updated shopping list, while keeping the other meals. Review the dependent changes as well as the new paragraph.

For an important document, keep your approved version so you can compare changes instead of relying on the assistant's claim that nothing else moved.

In the plan above, change only [part] because [problem]. Keep [approved details] unchanged. Update any affected totals, dates or shopping-list items. Show what changed and flag anything you could not preserve.

How do I make a poster that uses my own brand style?

Provide the intended audience, offer, exact wording, output size and authorised brand references. Describe what the references demonstrate: colour, spacing, photography or typography. ‘Make it professional’ is not a usable design brief.

Where image tools are available, work in rounds: approve a direction, then revise one issue. Inspect spelling, logos, contrast and cropped edges. Use a design tool for precise final typesetting when needed.

Can ChatGPT improve an old photo without changing the people?

You can request conservative cleanup, but you cannot assume it will preserve every facial detail. Keep the original scan, explain which defects to address and compare faces, hands, clothing and background after each revision. Missing detail may be invented rather than recovered.

A request to make it look like a modern phone photo is a reinterpretation, not historical restoration. Save that version separately and label it accordingly.

Why can a confident answer contain a fake source or wrong total?

Fluent wording is not evidence that the content was checked. An answer can combine plausible details incorrectly, overlook a source passage or give arithmetic that does not match the inputs. Asking it to sound more certain makes none of those problems safer.

Open cited sources and reproduce important calculations from the original values. If a claim cannot be supported, remove it or leave it unresolved rather than asking repeatedly until you get a confident reply.

What should I check before sharing personal or work information?

First check that you are allowed to share it in the specific service and workspace. Remove unnecessary names, account details and confidential material. Check the current privacy, retention and administrative settings rather than assuming every plan behaves alike.

Use fictional or redacted examples when possible. Redaction must include identifying details in screenshots, filenames and document metadata where relevant; merely deleting a name from the prompt may not be enough.

How do I make the writing sound like me rather than typical AI text?

Supply an authorised sample of your writing and explain the audience, point and concrete details that belong in this piece. Ask to remove stock openings, empty claims and unnecessary repetition—not to add fake anecdotes or deliberate mistakes.

Read it aloud and replace anything you would not actually say. Style clues and detector scores do not prove who wrote a text. Keep any disclosure required by your school, employer or publisher.

Can ChatGPT do the task, or only tell me how?

That depends on the environment, connected tools and permissions. Drafting a message is different from sending it; suggesting a booking is different from buying a ticket. Define the boundary before work begins and inspect the actual result afterward.

For example, request three suitable journey options with verified dates and total costs, but require your approval before payment. Never treat a friendly ‘done’ as proof that a booking or file change exists.
